Small town big adventure…
Kareri is Glacial freshwater lake present between the high mountains untouched by human activities. Trek to Kareri starts from Ghera Village which is about 15 kilometers from Dharamshala (ISBT). And it further takes 7-8 hours (17 km) to reach there from Ghera.
When you reach there the first thing you see is snow covered Dhauladhar and as you ascend towards it, Lake becomes visible just below the mountain. Melting snow from mountain serves as the source for Lake water and a stream, Nyund is the outflow. The Lake remains frozen in winters. There is a Temple of Lord Shiva on the hilltop overlooking the Lake. You will easily find Gaddi huts made out of rocks and mud. Gaddis often come here along with their cattle to graze them.
Kareri Lake is also the base camp to some exciting pass crossing over Dhauladhar. Once at the lakeside, you are at the base of Minkiani and Belni Passes. Going further into the mountains you will reach Lam Dal Lake. There is a lot one can explore from this campsite if time permits. Overall this is an ideal Himalayan Trek
